Prevent Scalding: Setting the Temperature of your Water Heater

With September being National Baby Safety Month we have been thinking about plumbing safety in your home. Parents do countless numbers of things to keep their children safe.  They set up baby gates in front of stairs, secure cupboards with locks, cut food up into tiny pieces, and buy all their headache pain relievers with impossible-to-open caps.  But, there’s one safety precaution that many people don’t even think to take at their homes and businesses, and that is to ensure that their Lafayette and New Iberia home or business water heaters are set to the right temperature.

Generally, a water heater’s temperature should not be set at anything above 125° F, but because a child can still get burned if exposed to water at this temperature for a short period of time, it is often recommended that water heaters be set for 120° F.  If your water heater temperature is set for higher than 125° F, an exposed child could end up with severe burns very quickly.  Also remember, that even if you don’t have any small children living at your home, there maybe be the potential for a child to visit.  Setting the water heater to the right temperature at your Lafayette or New Iberia home or business is simple, takes only a minute, and could literally save a life.  Not only could you save a life, but lowering the temperature of your water heater can also save you energy, which in turn will save you money.
