Lafayette & New Iberia Green Technology Managing the water supply

Green Technology

Managing the water supply is a rising concern, yet many Americans are unaware of how much water they waste. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that each person uses about 80 to100 gallons of water per day and a lot of it goes down the toilet.

At Pipes & Plugs Plumbing, we have dedicated ourselves to doing our part to assist our community in efforts to be environmentally responsible… “One Home and Business at a Time!” Help us in our efforts by making your home or businesses Plumbing as energy efficient as possible. Check out some of the options we offer for tankless water heaters, water saving fixtures, and solar hot water systems.

Here are a few simple things you can do to help:

  1. Replace old fixtures with new LOW FLOW products including….
Toilets, Urinals, Showerheads, Sink and Kitchen Faucets
  2. Buy only Water Saving Appliance
Dish washing and Clothes washing machines.
  3. Fix Leaks :
A little leak often gets ignored. But that constant drip can waste a lot of water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there are about 11,350 small drips (about 0.33ml each) in a gallon.  Many older toilets have a constant leak. Estimates say up to 22 gallons per day, or 8,000 gallons a year, of water are wasted there. Check for water leaks not only in old toilets and faucets but in the water line coming into your house.
  4. Be Water Saving Conscious
Turn off the water while you shave or brush your teeth and take a fast shower instead of a full bath.

Solar Water Systems

Solar water systems are so energy friendly that they could potentially save the United States millions of barrels of oil every year.  They not only help save the planet by greatly reducing the energy we use but they save you money. That’s why there has never been a better time to switch.

There are two main types of solar water systems, Active and Passive.

Active Solar Technology uses some electrical or fuel-driven mechanical equipment in order to perform some of its necessary functions.  Some examples would include systems which use:

  • Electrical pumps to move heated water
  • Motors to allow photovoltaic arrays to track the sun’s movement throughout the day in order to maximize the amount of solar energy being captured
  • Grid-tied solar electrical systems which rely on electricity as a backup source

Passive Solar Technology does not use any additional mechanical or electrical devices to deliver heat or electrical energy.  Solar water heating is traditionally a passive solar application and has the potential to provide enough hot water for all home washing and bathing needs.  Most often, a passive solar water systems includes a collector tank located on a south or west facing wall or roof, and a plumbing system that delivers the water to different parts of the home using gravity.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heater installation involves…

Taking out the traditional water heater tank in your home and replacing it with an electric or gas heating unit that heats the water directly. Tankless water heater installation is also known as an 'on demand water heater.' It is named this because when a tap is turned on, only the water needed travels through the heating unit for immediate use. So, if you are not using hot water, there is no energy wasted on heating it. On average, a tankless water heater installation can save up to 35% off of heating costs if installed correctly. If you haven't ever seen a tankless water heater installation, it may sound a little unbelievable, but a correctly sized heating unit will deliver an endless supply of hot water as it is needed. We can help you figure out whether you need a single point application water heater (for a bathroom sink), or a multipoint application (whole house tankless) water heater.
